How to find the address of your location

Thanks to GPS your phone knows where it is, but only as two numbers: latitude and longitude. This page looks up which street and building those numbers belong to on the map and gives you back an address you can read, copy or send.

  1. Tap “Show my exact location” and accept the location prompt.
  2. After a few seconds the full address appears on one line.
  3. Tap “Copy” to paste it into a message or form, or “Send on WhatsApp” to share it together with a map.

Address of another point on the map

Want the address of a spot you can see on the map, such as the house across the street, a plot of land or the place where you parked? Zoom in and tap it. The page gives you the street, house number (if there is one), neighborhood and postal code of that point. You can also type a place into the search box to jump straight to it.

How addresses are written in different countries

CountryUsual order
United StatesHouse number and street (plus apartment or suite), then city, state abbreviation and ZIP code
IndiaHouse or flat number and building, street, locality and a landmark, then city, state and PIN code
United KingdomHouse number and street, then town or city, then the postcode
CanadaCivic number and street, then city, province abbreviation and postal code
AustraliaUnit and street number and street, then suburb, state abbreviation and postcode

The page lists the street before the house number and the postal code before the city, in the order the map data uses. When you write the address on a form or an envelope, put the parts in your country's usual order. Details such as apartment, floor, suite or flat number are not on the map, so add them yourself. In India, a well-known landmark (“near the bus stand”, “opposite the temple”) also helps delivery riders a lot.

When the address may be off

  • Low accuracy. If the error is more than 30 to 40 meters, the point can land on the next street. Check the “Accuracy” value and update by a window or outdoors.
  • Large buildings and corners. In a mall, a hospital or at an intersection, the address may be that of the nearest entrance rather than the main address.
  • Streets without house numbers on the map. You see the street and neighborhood, but no number.
  • Rural roads and trails. Only the town or county may appear. In that case your GPS coordinates are the most useful thing to share.

What your current address is useful for

  • Telling a taxi, delivery rider or friend where to pick you up in an unfamiliar area.
  • Giving emergency services the street, number and city.
  • Filling in a form with the right city and postal code.
  • Checking how a home or business appears on the map before you give out the address.

If someone needs to come to you, the easiest way is to share your location as a link: they open the map and start directions without typing anything.

Questions about your address

How do I find my exact address?

Tap “Show my exact location” and allow location access. The page turns your GPS position into an address: street, house number (if available), neighborhood, postal code and city.

What street am I on right now?

With your exact location on, the street name appears in the first line of the result and in the “Street and number” row. At an intersection or in a square you see the street closest to your point.

Why is the house number missing?

House numbers come from OpenStreetMap, and not every street is fully mapped. If the number is missing we show the street and neighborhood. To give someone the exact spot, share the link to your location or your coordinates.

Can I use this address for official documents?

No. It is a reliable guide for finding your way, calling a taxi or receiving a delivery. For official paperwork use the address on your documents, because official numbering can differ from the map.

How do I describe my location if there is no street?

Use the coordinates or the Plus Code from the list. Every maps app understands them, and they lead straight to the point even where there is no postal address.

How do I find my address on Google Maps?

In the Google Maps app, touch and hold the map where the blue dot is to drop a pin; the panel at the bottom shows the nearest address. On this page you get the same result by tapping “Show my exact location”, and you can copy the address in one tap.
