How to find your ZIP code

  1. Tap “Show my exact location” and allow location access.
  2. Your phone or computer pins your position with GPS or nearby Wi-Fi networks.
  3. The ZIP code appears in large type, with the city, county and state below it and a button to copy it.

Before you share your location the page can only show the city of your internet connection, which is not enough for a ZIP code: a large city has dozens of them. To check another place, type a street address into the search box or tap the map.

What the five digits mean

A ZIP code narrows down from region to post office: the first digit stands for a group of states, the next two for a regional mail processing center and the last two for the post office or delivery area. Many addresses also have a ZIP+4 code, where four extra digits after a hyphen point to a block, one side of a street, a building or a group of P.O. boxes.

First digitStates
0Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Puerto Rico
1Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania
2District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia
3Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee
4Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio
5Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin
6Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska
7Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas
8Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming
9Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington

Why the ZIP code may differ from your mailing address

  • ZIP codes follow mail routes, not city limits. One ZIP code can span two towns or two counties, and the town name in it is not always the city you live in.
  • P.O. boxes and large buildings often have their own ZIP codes, different from the street they are on.
  • Near a ZIP code boundary an accuracy of a few hundred meters can put the point on the other side. Step outside and tap the button again.
  • For official mail, confirm the full ZIP+4 of a street address with the USPS ZIP Code lookup.

ZIP code, county and time zone

Since ZIP codes can cross county lines, the county of your exact spot is more reliable than one guessed from the ZIP code: see what county am I in. The list under the map also shows your city and state, and what time zone am I in gives the local time zone. Outside the US, the PIN code and postal code page covers India, the UK, Canada and more.

Questions about ZIP codes

What ZIP code am I in right now?

Tap “Show my exact location” at the top of this page and allow location access. The ZIP code of the spot where you are appears in large type, with the city, county and state.

How do I find my local ZIP code?

Use your exact location on this page, or type your street address into the search box. For the full ZIP+4 of a mailing address, the USPS ZIP Code lookup gives the official answer.

What is my ZIP+4 code?

It is your 5-digit ZIP code plus four digits that narrow delivery down to a block, building or group of P.O. boxes. This page shows the 5-digit ZIP code; the USPS lookup gives the ZIP+4 for a street address.

Can a ZIP code cover more than one city or county?

Yes. ZIP codes are drawn around delivery routes, so many cross city and county lines. Use your exact location or full address to know the city and county for sure.

Why is no ZIP code shown?

The map has no postal code recorded for that point, which happens in parks, on highways and in some rural areas. Search for the nearest street address or look it up with the USPS tool.
