Open your current location in Google Maps

Tap “Show my exact location” above and allow location access. Once the point appears, use “Open in Google Maps” in the list of options: Google Maps opens at exactly that spot, in the app if you have it or in the browser if not, ready for directions, Street View or saving the place. The map on this page itself comes from OpenStreetMap, so you can see your location even without Google Maps.

How to see your location in the Google Maps app

  1. Open Google Maps and allow it to use your location if it asks.
  2. Tap the location button, the target icon in the lower right corner of the map.
  3. The blue dot is you. The light blue circle around it shows how accurate the position is, and the blue beam shows which way you are facing.

Allow location for Google Maps on iPhone and Android

  • iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then turn Location Services on, tap Google Maps, choose While Using the App and turn on Precise Location.
  • Android: Settings > Location, turn on Use location, then open App location permissions > Maps and choose Allow only while using the app with Use precise location on. The wording varies a little between brands.
  • Computer: open maps.google.com and click the location button in the lower right corner; the browser then asks whether Google Maps may use your location. Without GPS a computer locates itself through nearby Wi-Fi networks, so the circle is larger.

If Google Maps shows the wrong location

  • Turn on Wi-Fi, even without connecting to a network: nearby networks help your phone find its position faster and more precisely, especially indoors.
  • Calibrate the compass if the blue beam points the wrong way: tap the blue dot and choose Calibrate.
  • On Android, turn on Google Location Accuracy in the location settings.
  • Step outside or near a window, then tap the location button again. Thick walls and tall buildings weaken the GPS signal.
  • On a computer, turn off your VPN: websites may otherwise place you where the VPN server is.

Coordinates and sharing

To get the coordinates of a place in Google Maps, touch and hold the spot on a phone, or right-click it on a computer; the latitude and longitude appear at the top. This page shows the coordinates of your position in four formats right away: see my GPS coordinates. To send your position to someone, Google Maps has Location sharing in the menu behind your profile picture, and this site makes a link or a WhatsApp message in one tap: see share my location.

Questions about your location on Google Maps

How can I see my current location in Google Maps?

Open Google Maps and tap the location button in the lower right corner: the blue dot is you. On this page you can also tap “Show my exact location” and then “Open in Google Maps” to jump straight to your position.

Can I see my current location without the Google Maps app?

Yes. This page shows your location on a map in any browser, with the address and coordinates. You only need to allow location access when your browser asks.

Why is my location wrong on Google Maps?

Usually the phone has only a rough position from mobile towers or Wi-Fi. Turn on precise location and Wi-Fi, calibrate the compass by tapping the blue dot, and step outside for a moment.

How do I get my coordinates from Google Maps?

Touch and hold your blue dot or any spot on a phone, or right-click it on a computer, and the latitude and longitude appear at the top of the screen. This page shows them right away after you share your location.

Does this site use Google Maps?

No. The map here comes from OpenStreetMap. The “Open in Google Maps” button simply opens the same point in Google Maps, where you can get directions.
