How to find your county
Tap “Show my exact location” and allow location access. The page takes your device's position and looks up on the map which county that point lies in, then shows it at the top together with the city, state and country. Before that it can only show the area of your internet connection, because IP addresses reveal a city at best and county lines often run right through towns. To check another place, type an address into the search box or tap the map.
Why you might need your county
- Voting: voter registration, polling places and ballots are run by county election offices in most US states.
- Property and taxes: deeds, property taxes and many sales tax rates depend on the county.
- Courts and jury duty: summonses and local courts are organized by county.
- Weather and emergency alerts: warnings, evacuation orders and burn bans are issued county by county.
- Forms: car registration, licenses and permits often ask for your county of residence.
Counties around the world
| Country | What the county level is called | Note |
|---|---|---|
| United States | County; parish in Louisiana, borough or census area in Alaska | Over 3,000 counties and equivalents; some cities, such as many in Virginia, belong to no county |
| United Kingdom | County, unitary authority or council area | Ceremonial and administrative counties do not always match |
| Ireland | County | 26 counties in the Republic |
| India | District | More than 700 districts, each split into tehsils or taluks |
| Canada | County or regional municipality | Used in some provinces only |
| Kenya | County | 47 counties |
When the county may be missing or wrong
- Near a county line: with an accuracy of several hundred meters the point can land in the neighboring county. Step outside and tap the button again.
- Independent cities: places such as Baltimore, St. Louis or Richmond are not part of any county, so the page shows the city instead or says that there is no county.
- Missing map data: the county comes from OpenStreetMap. In a few areas the boundary is not mapped yet.
- ZIP codes: a ZIP code can cross county lines, so the county of your exact address is more reliable than one looked up from the ZIP code alone.

Questions about counties
What county am I in right now?
Tap “Show my exact location” at the top of this page and allow location access. The county of the spot where you are appears as the main answer, with the city, state and country below it.
How do I find the county of an address?
Type the street address or the name of the town into the search box. The page shows that place on the map with its county, state and postal code.
Can I find my county from my ZIP code?
Only roughly, because many ZIP codes cross county lines. Searching for the full address, or using your exact location, gives the right county.
Why does it say there is no county?
Some places belong to no county, such as independent cities in Virginia, Baltimore or St. Louis, and in a few areas the county boundary is missing from the map data.
Does this work outside the United States?
Yes. Outside the US the page shows the equivalent level: the county in the UK, Ireland or Kenya and the district in India.
