How this page finds your time zone
The answer at the top appears at once and comes from your device's clock settings: phones and computers that set the time zone automatically know it from the mobile network or from their own location. When you tap “Show my exact location”, or look up any other place, the page also reads the time zone of that exact point from a world map of time zone boundaries. That lookup runs inside your browser, so the position is not sent anywhere. If the two disagree, the result says so: this usually happens right after crossing a time zone line or landing after a flight.
What the result means
- Zone name, such as Eastern Daylight Time or India Standard Time: what the zone is called in everyday language.
- UTC offset, such as UTC−04:00 or UTC+05:30: how far local time is ahead of or behind Coordinated Universal Time today, daylight saving time included.
- Time zone ID, such as America/New York or Asia/Kolkata: the name computers, calendars and apps use. It is the value to pick when a form or a device asks for your time zone.
- Local time: the current time in that zone, updated every minute while the page is open.

Daylight saving time
Most of the United States and Canada move their clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November; the European Union switches on the last Sundays of March and October. Arizona (apart from the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii stay on standard time all year, and India, China and Japan do not use daylight saving time at all. The offset on this page is always today's, so it already accounts for the clock change.
If your device shows the wrong time zone
- iPhone: Settings > General > Date & Time, then turn on Set Automatically.
- Android: Settings > System > Date & time, then turn on Set time zone automatically (the wording varies a little by brand).
- Windows: Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then turn on Set time zone automatically.
- Mac: System Settings > General > Date & Time, then turn on Set time zone automatically using your current location.
- A VPN does not change your device's time zone, but websites that guess it from your IP address may show the zone of the VPN server instead.

Questions about time zones
What time zone am I in right now?
The large answer at the top of this page: the name of your time zone, its UTC offset and the local time. It is read from your device at once; tap “Show my exact location” to check it against your actual position.
What is my UTC offset?
It is shown under the zone name, for example UTC−05:00 for New York in winter or UTC+05:30 for India. The value includes daylight saving time when it applies today.
Why does my phone show a different time zone than this page?
Your phone keeps the zone it last set. If automatic time zone is off, or you have just crossed a time zone line, it can lag behind. Turn on automatic time zone in your device settings and the two will match.
Can I look up the time zone of another place?
Yes. Type a city or address into the search box or tap any point on the map, and the page shows that place's time zone, UTC offset and current local time.
Does the time zone lookup send my location anywhere?
No. It runs in your browser with a built-in boundary map, so your position is not sent anywhere for it. The map and the address do need an internet connection.
